Bangladeshis in Singapore |

It is estimated that there are 80-90 thousand Bangladeshi origin people living in Singapore. Out of them 90% are migrant workers doing different kinds of skilled and semi-skilled jobs. They are mostly employed in ship building and construction sectors. The remaining Bangladeshis are doing professional jobs. Among the professionals, most are mariners followed by engineers, bankers, management consultants and university and polytechnic faculty members. Bangladeshis are also involved in business as well.

Under Singapore Cooperation Training Programme Awards (SCPTA), Singapore offers most of the training facilities for Bangladeshi Civil Servants. In 2007, under this programme, 34 Bangladeshi administrative, financial and police service officers were trained in Singapore. |

Singapore is one of the leading investor in Bangladesh. In 2006, Singapore was the 9th largest investor in Bangladesh with investments in telecom, textiles, electronic & electrical goods, knit ware, readymade garments, LPG bottling, construction industry, cement, radio, TV, VCD assembling, chemicals, fish processing etc. Foreign Direct Investments are made in various Export Processing Zones (EPZs), and potential sectors are power generation, textile, high tech industry, labor-intensive industry, electrical and electronics industry, ICT sector, real estate, hotels and holiday resorts, hydro carbon exploitation, tourism infrastructure etc. Investors may like to buy various Government industries waiting to be privatized. It is estimated that the Singapore investment in Bangladesh is more than a billion US dollar. |

Bangladesh - Singapore Trade and Economic Relations |

Singapore is an important trading partner of Bangladesh. Trade between the two counties has been increasing steadily over the years. In 2007 Bangladesh was 36th largest trading partner and 27th largest export destination of Singapore. Bilateral trade between the two countries has gradually increased from S$ 1.46 billion in 2002 to S$ 1.7 billion in 2006. The major items of export from Bangladesh to Singapore are naphtha, readymade garments (woven and knitwear), footwear, jute bags and sacks, leather products, frozen fish, fresh vegetables, chemicals, ceramic products etc whereas those from Singapore are refined petroleum products, industrial chemicals, textile and leather machinery, zinc, computer and computer accessories, heavy duty electrical and electronic equipments, various non-ferrous metals and jewellery etc. |

Bangladesh-Singapore Political Relations |

Singapore recognized Bangladesh in February 1972. It is one of the first few countries that recognize Bangladesh immediately after her independence. Bangladesh’s diplomatic representation in Singapore was first made with the opening of a Trade Commission in 1973. A full-fledged Diplomatic Mission headed by a Resident High Commissioner was established ten years later in 1983. Singapore is yet to open a full-fledged Resident Mission in Dhaka. In April 1997, the Singapore High Commissioner to Bangladesh was appointed with Residence in Singapore. In Bangladesh, Singapore is represented by a Consular Office opened in December 1997. |
